About the program

I have had the honor of hosting a series of 10 workshops for students interested in customizing and remixing technology, art, and Lowrider culture as a grantee of the 2022 San Jose Creative Ambassador Program.

Through a weekend course (roughly 4hrs), students learned about Lowriding in San Jose, the diverse history of Digital Media Art, and gained hands-on experience customizing a sound-to-light reactive artwork. The video below is an example.

Who participated

  • Youth as young as 6 to 17 along with an adult. Parents, uncles, aunts, and even grandparents attended with their youth participant.
  • From all interest levels from no relationship to lowriding but interested in technology to those born into the lifestyle

¡S.T.E.A.M. Con Estilo!

STEAM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. But this time with a Lowrider twist!

S.T.E.A.M. & lowriding?

The rich and diverse history of lowriding and its many variations incorporate an incredible amount of ingenuity and innovation. From the first cars to use hydraulics to custom paint, every aspect of lowriding involves science, technology, engineering, art, and math - whether it's apparent or not, STEAM has always been a part of the lowriding scene.

At the end of each workshop, participants leave with a fully functioning artwork with their custom design and a newfound perspective on the lowrider culture.

Bringing STEAM and lowriding together

Creative Ambassador Extensions

Because of the elevated visibility as a Creative Ambassador, I have had the opportunity to connect, host, and participate in various events tangential to my Ambassador program that aligns with my community and passions.

Park & Paint

A simple premise with a huge community impact

On July 24, over 70 people from all over the bay area came to Roosevelt Park in San Jose to participate in a Park & Paint event. Pinche Kid, of El Clasico Tattoo, reached out to help host a lowrider event during his visit to Northern California. Beginning in LA during the pandemic, individuals gather at a local park and create artwork inspired by the cars that pull up.

SJ Makers set up vendors for an incredible day of painting and drawing some of San Jose's finest rides.

"Cruising Ban" lifted

Guest keynote speaker

Because of the community work done throughout the summer, I was given the privilege to address those in attendance with a speech about the impact of our lowrider culture.

Lowriding with Elementary students

Kicking off Hispanic Heritage month

An elementary school teacher took notice of my summer workshop series and invited me to guest lecture and conduct a hands-on art collage activity about lowriding. Some kids knew about the culture, most did not, but all turned into lowrider artists by then end of the day.
